Br. George Professes Temporary Vows as a Monk at St. Gregory's Abbey

St. Gregory's Abbey was blessed in a special way on August 6, 1999, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Br. George Hubl professed temporary vows as a monk of our community. Br. George, from Norman, Oklahoma, dedicated himself during his novitiate to study of Rule of St. Benedict, and shared in the life and work of our community. With his profession of temporary vows, Br. George has made a commitment to live as a Benedictine monk for the next three years.

The profession ceremony took place during the celebration of the Eucharist on August 6. After an inspiring homily delivered by Abbot Martin, Br. George knelt before the Abbot an professed his vows of obedience, stability and conversion through a monastic manner of life. Then, according to the instructions written by St. Benedict in his Rule for Monasteries, Br. George signed the document on the altar, where he left it along with the gifts of bread and wine. After this, Br. George was clothed with the full Benedictine habit and was given a copy of the Rule.

To conclude the profession ceremony, the members of the community extended to Br. Geroge the Sign of Peace.

The festivities continued after Mass with a wonderful meal for the community and for the many guests who were present.

Benedictine monks take vows of Obedience, Stability and Conversion of Life. With temporary profession, Br. George has become a "junior monk." During his period of temporary profession (the "juniorate"), Br. George will continue to study Benedictine spirituality, and will enter more deeply into the life and work of our community. At the end of the period of temporary vows, Br. George will have the opportunity to apply for life-long, or "solemn," vows. Please keep Br. George in your prayers as he continues in his period of initial formation.
